what is cloud computing?

Cloud Computing is distributed computing or really infrastructure as a service to me. Using resources from distributed servers/computers, cloud computing frees you from the configuration of local servers. The cloud is another movement towards making computing a service that can be adjusted based on the needs of a business. While there are data and computing resources in the background the end user just gets the service. This is really distributed computing on the backend.  You pay for the services and the resources that you use.  The cloud itself is technically virtualizing resources and it manages and maintains itself so there are no worries about 1 piece of hardware going down.  Cloud computing is accessing these resources and services needed to perform functions with dynamically changing needs.

Cloud computing according to IT Strategists is infrastructure as a service that is basically pay-as-you-go infrastructure. There are a lot of applications associated with cloud computing that can be seen as a money-saver movement as well for the IT world. Here is the article on the IT Strategists website:www.itstrategists.com/cloud-computing.aspx

Services, such as e-mail and calendar or data storage that traditionally have existed on site, are moved to a centralized computer server at a remote location and are accessed through the Internet. By moving these services off campus, the College is able to provide members of the Dartmouth community with access to a service that is constantly improving and keeping up-to-date with the latest advances in technology, one that provides consistent and secure e-mail and calendar experience for all users, and that provides increased storage – all at a lower cost than we could provide ourselves.
