WHAT IS COACHING?
Coaching provides the tools and feedback people need to perform at their peak. Coaching is the process of unleashing people’s potential to reach meaningful, important objectives. It can also provide much-needed structure and stability to enable people to perform at their best. It can also provide a new perspective on issues, clarify obstacles and redefine dreams.
Professional Coaching is a professional partnership between a qualified coach and an individual or team that supports the achievement of extraordinary results, based on goals set by the individual or team. Through the process of coaching, individuals focus on the skills and actions needed to successfully produce their personally relevant results. The individual or team chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes observations and questions as well as concepts and principles which can assist in generating possibilities and identifying actions. Through the coaching process the clarity that is needed to support the most effective actions is achieved. Coaching accelerates the individual’s or team’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of possibilities leading to more effective choices. Coaching concentrates on where individuals are now and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future.
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as “an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life. In each meeting, the client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes observations and questions. This interaction creates clarity and moves the client into action. Coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on where clients are now and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future, recognizing that results are a matter of the client’s intentions, choices and actions, supported by the coach’s efforts and application of the coaching process.
A balanced and happy life comes from making decisions, being clear and being organized. Coaching can help you clear the clutter in your life, take action, move into new places, become the entrepreneur or business leader you want to be, and help you make your personal life much more satisfying. Even a question such as what kind of car to purchase is a relevant issue if not making a decision is causing delays and stagnation in other areas of your life. Here is an example of how coaching works: a few of my clients from Denmark work with me on the Nordic cultural effects of “Janteloven” and the corporate atmosphere. Janteloven is an unspoken rule discouraging anyone from thinking they have done anything notable. Our clients are working to move out of that mindset and learning to be proud of their accomplishments and to not feel inhibited about mentioning those achievements, so they can achieve even more – which in turn benefits society. Coaching is an interactive process that empowers you to tap into your internal wisdom and eliminate limiting beliefs and other obstacles, allowing for clarity of thought, more conscious decisionmaking, and peak performance. It’s important to note that Coaching is not therapy, counseling, mentorship, training, or consultation, although, as your coach, I may, when appropriate, remove my coach “hat” and take on a different role. By and large, though, as your coach, I acknowledge that you have the answers inside of you, and I am the expert at getting those answers out.
