WHAT IS COACHING?
It is a coach’s belief that everyone has the answers within themselves, and the skill and practice of coaching is to help the client find those answers within and to bring them to the surface! They can then be converted into the energy that is positive action. Coaching is a progressive process where stumbling blocks are converted into stepping stones and where each step brings the client closer to the fulfilment of their desires and potential.
Coaching is an ongoing relationship between the professional coach and the client, which focuses on the client taking action toward the realization of their vision, goals or desires. Coaching uses a process of inquiry and personal discovery to build the clients level of awareness and responsibility and provides the client with structure, support and feedback. Coaching is considered to be distinct from psychotherapy. Most coaches engage in coaching with generally well-functioning individuals. Coaches are helping people succeed with their most important goals not treating mental disorders. Dr. Auerbach often says that a professional coach is a “thought-partner” who helps his or her client shine a spotlight on their thinking to help make better decisions.
Coaching is a supportive partnership between two individuals; the coach (the person providing the coaching) and the coachee (the person receiving the coaching) and is based on mutual respect and trust. In order for personal development and forward movement to occur, a coaching relationship must be anchored by this trust and collaboration.
Coaching is an interactive process that empowers you to tap into your internal wisdom and eliminate limiting beliefs and other obstacles, allowing for clarity of thought, more conscious decisionmaking, and peak performance. It’s important to note that Coaching is not therapy, counseling, mentorship, training, or consultation, although, as your coach, I may, when appropriate, remove my coach “hat” and take on a different role. By and large, though, as your coach, I acknowledge that you have the answers inside of you, and I am the expert at getting those answers out.
A balanced and happy life comes from making decisions, being clear and being organized. Coaching can help you clear the clutter in your life, take action, move into new places, become the entrepreneur or business leader you want to be, and help you make your personal life much more satisfying. Are you ready to make changes in your life? Even a question such as what kind of car to purchase is a relevant issue if not making a decision is causing delays and stagnation in other areas of your life. Here is an example of how coaching works: a few of my clients from Denmark work with me on the Nordic cultural effects of “Janteloven” and the corporate atmosphere. Janteloven is an unspoken rule discouraging anyone from thinking they have done anything notable. Our clients are working to move out of that mindset and learning to be proud of their accomplishments and to not feel inhibited about mentioning those achievements, so they can achieve even more – which in turn benefits society.
