What is comprehension?
Literal comprehension is the first step in understanding the meaning of words. It is the ability to recall exactly what the text said. Literal comprehension is a prerequisite to develop a deeper understanding (inferential comprehension) of written material. Deeper comprehension is the ability to understand idioms and sarcasm, as well as to predict, connect, question, apply, infer, visualize, and synthesize written text.
