What is Computer Memory?

Computer memory can refer to many types of memory within a computer, but, typically, it refers to random access memory (RAM). It is physically found on computer chips that are inserted onto the computer’s motherboard. RAM is electronic, rather than mechanical; that is, it does not have moving parts and therefore data access to it is very fast. Modern computers often have somewhere between 256 MB (megabytes) and 2 GB (gigabytes) of RAM, although there are, of course, computers with more or less RAM. RAM is also volatile, meaning that it gets lost when the computer is switched off. The expensive nature of RAM spurred the creation of another type of computer memory called virtual memory. With virtual memory, a slow down in performance is observed only when you try to operate a program whose files are in the virtual memory. In essence, this slow down is only observed when shifting between programs. In this way, virtual memory often provides a cheaper alternative to RAM. A third type of com

Category: Computers & Technology : Hardware Perhaps the most misunderstand concept amongst novice computer users/owners is the difference between RAM and Hard Drive space. Knowing the difference becomes very important when trying to figure out why the latest and greatest “must have” software won’t work on your computer. It also helps you figure out what needs to be done so it will work. Hopefully this will answer the oft-asked question: “It says I need 32MB RAM, but I have 800MB storage – that should be enough, right?” Hard Drive The Hard Drive may also be called “Storage” or “Disk Space” and it is measured in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB). A Hard Drive consists of a metal platter which spins very fast. As it spins, the hard drive “head” moves along the platter and can “re

” and with good reason. Computer memory can be a difficult concept to understand for most people. There are only two types of memory Ram memory and hard drive memory. What is Computer Memory? Ram memory what is computer memory?” in reference to RAM memory. Ram memory is also known as random access memory and it stores information that the processor on your computer uses. Ram memory is made up of a module that has integrated circuits on it. The integrated circuits store information on them and that information can be accessed by the CPU in any way or form, that is why it is called random. The memory can be accessed in any way without moving or changing the module in any way. The only problem with RAM memory is that the moment the computer is shut down that memory is lost. Unlike data previous data storage methods ram memory can pull data from any location within the circuits and other methods like tapes and magnetic disks require physical amount of the data or an optical reading unit.
