What is Critical Limb Ischemia?
Skin ulcers or lesions that appear on the feet and legs are typically caused by Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). In some, PAD is a result of diabetes. When the large arteries of the leg narrow and harden, blood flow is restricted. Because of this “poor circulation,” the tissues then become starved of the nutrients and oxygen they need and skin ulcers begin to form. Stages III and IV of PAD are the most serious and are referred to as ‘Critical Limb Ischemia’. It is here that the possibility of amputation is present. At this time, there are no prescription drugs available to effectively treat Critical Limb Ischemia, and there are limited treatments available that will delay or prevent amputation. Options seem limited, but this is where a research study offers an alternative path.
