What is decoding (also known as word attack skills)?
Decoding is the ability and willingness to sound out words found in print by generating all the sounds into a recognizable word (i.e. the letters c-a-t says cat). Technically this is called phonological recoding. Word attack skills is the ability to convert graphic symbols (i.e. the letters in the English alphabet) into intelligible language.
