Dermabrasion (also known as skin refinishing, surgical skin planning, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, or skin peels) is a common health and beauty treatment that generally smoothes the skin. With dermabrasion, the skin is frozen and then “sanded” with a high-speed rotating brush, effectively scrubbing away a layer of skin. Dermabrasion was originally developed to treat pox marks and scars from acne, tattoos, accidents, or diseases. Microdermabrasion is a gentler form of dermabrasion which reduces fine lines, dulls skin, brown spots, mild acne scars, and generally reduces the appearance of aging. The type of anesthesia to be used is generally decided on a case-by-case basis during consultation. Patients usually heal within seven to ten days from the “brush-burn” sensation.
