What is difference between champaign or sparkling wine?
The main difference is Champaign is the name reserved for sparkling wines made in the Champaign region in France. To respect the Champaign region growers, other sparkling wines made outside of the region should only be referred to as ‘sparkling wines’. There are many tiers of sparkling wines ranging from Andre which is essentially juice with carbonation to high end products produced in the most complicated methods such as LeReve by Doamine Carneros (owned by Tattinger, a Champaign producer in France). If you ever tour Domaine Carneros, they’ll hammer this into your head. I would recommend that you go find something around $10 – $15 a bottle to serve at the wedding. Go with something a bit sweeter because most guests will not appreciate the high-end champaign or sparkling wines. I was ready to serve $40/bottle champaign for toasts but was steered away to a $10/ bottle by a wine shop manager…. and our guests LOVED it.
