What is Dragon Quest 8?
The Dragon Quest series is very popular in Japan, but not quite as popular in the US where until now it was called the Dragon Warrior series. Pretty much everyone with a Nintendo played the original 8-bit game, but some of the titles in the middle weren’t nearly as popular. Dragon Quest 8 tries to walk the fine line between modern graphics and 3d environments while still staying true to the traditional gameplay mechanics of Dragon Quest’s roots. What does the game do well? Graphically speaking, Dragon Quest 8 is quite impressive. While the environment is 3d, the characters and monsters are cel shaded. The artistic design is spear headed by Akira Toriyama, so the human characters have a very “Dragonball Z” look. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of his portrayal of people, but I really do enjoy the monsters in the game.
