A JOURNEY WITH CHRIST Luke relates the story of two disciples of Jesus who were going along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. As these two friends were walking together, they shared their heart’s deepest concerns about the death of Jesus. An unknown person, who was the risen Christ, joined them and explained the scriptures as they walked, how it was ordained that Christ would suffer and so enter his glory. Toward the end of the day’s travel, they urged the stranger to eat with them. The climax happened when Christ took bread and gave it to them. the two had their eyes opened and they recognized the stranger as the risen Christ. They rushed back to Jerusalem to tell the others. What is the Walk to Emmaus? It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as he is revealed to you through other believers. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with prayerful discernment and an invitation from a sponsor. After one accepts this invitation, an application is completed. The Emmaus leaders prayerfully consider each applicant and in Gods time, the person is invited to attend a three-day experience of New Testament Christianity. Following the three days, participants are given an opportunity to join in small groups to support each other in their ongoing walk with Christ. Through the formational process of accountable discipleship in small groups and participation in the Emmaus community, servant-leadership skills are developed for use in the local church and its mission. It aims to involve the whole church in evangelism, the nurture of new believers and ongoing Christian discipleship. It is rooted in an understanding of evangelism, nurture and discipleship modelled on the example of Jesus in the story of the Emmaus Road. The Emmaus approach In his report Finding Faith Today, John Finney, one of the authors of Emmaus, found that most people: • come to faith in Christ through relationship with a group of Christians; • become Christians gradually, over a period of time – ‘Damascus road’ conversions are quite rare; • find entry into church life reasonably easy if they come with a friend; • find that ‘belonging’ to a chur

The Emmaus Movement in the United Methodist Church has its ancestry in the Roman Catholic Cursillo. In Spanish, “Cursillo” is a very common word, derived from “Curso”, which means “little course”, something that is done in a few days rather than in weeks or months. The term Cursillo connotes the idea of intensity, of doing a great deal in very little time. Cursillo began on the island of Najorca, some 170 miles southwest of the mainland of Spain, sometime in the late 1940’s. During the period of 1936-1939, Spain had been involved in a bitter Civil War, followed by the World War II years of unsettled conditions. The desire for Church renewal and inspiration for the life of the Apostolate grew out of these nine years of much stress within the country. Throughout Spain, and in the twenty Republics of Latin America, the “Young Men’s Branch of the Catholic Action,” similar to the Episcopal Youth Organization, Catholic Youth Organization, and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship, planned a
