What is Endometrial (Uterine) cancer?
Cancer develops when cells in the body grow out of control. Cancers are usually named for the part of the body where they are formed. There are two types of uterine cancer: adenocarcinoma (endometrial) and sarcoma of the uterus. The most common type of uterine cancer is endometrial cancer. Endometrial cancer develops from cells in the endometrium, or lining, of the uterus and it is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs. Who is at risk? A risk factor is anything that increases your chance for developing cancer. Most endometrial cancers are hormone-driven, and factors that increase the amount of estrogen exposure (or an imbalance in estrogen) increase a womans risk of developing endometrial cancer. Risk factors for developing endometrial cancer include the following: Age: Endometrial cancer is most common in women over 50 years of age. The average age at diagnosis is 60. Ethnicity: White women have a greater risk of developing endometrial cancer than black women. Havin
