The difference between the two techniques is in the final "look". Faux finishes add transparent color, dimension, texture and pattern to walls. Paint is opaque color, with no or little dimensional texture or pattern. Faux finishes use specialty products and tools to create visual interest for the eye to follow, painting does not.
