What is Fiberglass Resin?
Fiberglass resin is a semi-solid material made with a combination of fiberglass strings and resin. Fiberglass is comprised of very fine glass fibers and is widely used as a reinforcing agent. Resin is a semi-solid substance that contains the properties necessary for it to be used as a base for other materials. Concrete, on the other hand, is thick and grainy and does not penetrate well into the fine detail of a mold. Fiberglass is an ideal material for large sculptures because it is light enough that people can move statues made from it without the help of a crane. Fiberglass statues also cost considerably less to ship than concrete statues. Of course, fiberglass is also very strong. It is reinforced and is the same material used to make boat hulls that are designed to withstand the shock and the elements of the sea without breaking. “Fiberglass Resin” is a liquid used in a two part composit involving fiberglass strands often woven into cloth or mat. Several resins are available for use with mobile audio fiberglass projects. Polyester Resin is the most common because of it’s wide availability and it is the least expensive available. They are also easier to use, and fast curing. Vinyl Ester Resin is a more durable, more heat resistant, stronger resin than polyester. It is also more expensive than polyester, and needs to be mixed more exactly, making it less desirable in car audio. Epoxy Resin is the most expensive resin and is strongest of all three. It is generally used when laminating carbon fibre or kevlar, but can also be used for fiberglass projects.
