Pollen is created when plants produce flowers. It is the male germ seed (sperm) of plants. Pollination occurs when the pollen is carried by bees, wind, or other means from the flower’s stamen to the stigma of another flower’s pistil. Fertilization occurs when the pollen reaches the ovary. This is when a seed is created. Without this process there wouldn’t be any plant life on earth–flowers, fruits, vegetables, trees, etc. Pollen is microscopic. So small , it would take almost 10,000 pollen grains to cover the size of your thumbnail. Each grain has an almost impenetrable out shell. On the inside of the shell is where the nutrients are found. Think of a seed (such as sunflower seed) that has an outer shell with the meat or other nutrients inside. Each pollen grain has tiny germinal opening called hilas.
