What is George Steinbrenners Legacy?
As New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has now almost completely faded from public view, his legacy is nearly complete. It is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to overstate the change in Major League Baseball during Steinbrenner’s time and its effect on the Yankees and the sports world at large. Steinbrenner helped to fundamentally change the landscape of professional sports in ways not imaginable when he first bought the Yankees; he triggers interesting debate on at least a couple of planes. Many debate whether George Steinbrenner’s legacy is mostly good or mostly bad. Furthermore, the extent to which he impacted the game of baseball versus how much did the underlying economic structure of baseball change at precisely the right time for him can be debated endlessly.
