What is GERD, or GORD, and is it related to my Acid Reflux?
GERD is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, and is the same condition as Acid Reflux Disease. It is just another term which denotes the diagnosis of the reflux condition. The term is relatively new, approximately 20 years old, and is the preferred term for physicians today because it accurately describes the problem: a backflow (reflux) of acid from the stomach into the esophagus, which causes symptoms and potential damage. GORD is GERD. To lessen the confusion, the formal spelling of esophagus in Britain is oesophagus. Hence, GERD is GORD in many European Countries.
