Guitar Hero® is a multi-platform video game that was first introduced in 2005. It was somewhat unpopular when it first came on the market because of its high cost. The controller was the first to resemble a musical instrument. The popularity of the game has expanded since that initial release, and has been followed by many sequels including Guitar Hero® II and III, 80's, Aerosmith, and World Tour. One study showed that 95% of the people who entered Best Buy purchased Guitar Hero® III on the day it came out. RedOctane was the original producer of the game, while Harmonix was the creator. In 2006, Harmonix was sold to MTV and RedOctane was purchased by Activision. The Guitar Hero® brand was left with Activision. Harmonix was later responsible for the competition Rock Band®.
