What is happening in “Sea of Clouds”?
In “Sea of Clouds” an ultrasonic (very high- frequency) machine creates vapor from a pool of water housed inside the sculpture. Once in the air, the water vapor condenses into small droplets that form thick fog. The waves you see in “Sea of Clouds” are formed mostly by turbulence (see “Jovian Cloud Tops” and “Turbulent Orb”). Convection (see “Convection Cells”) may play a minor role in the formation of the wavy patterns in “Sea of Clouds”. The cooler, denser water vapor flows down, displacing the warmer, lighter vapor. You can alter the currents by running your hand through the vapor.
