What is hdmi?
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV), over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a compact 19-pin plug and cable for connecting High-Definition video and multi-channel audio-capable as well as helping to speed the convergence of computer and consumer AV products. High Definition technology or HD has seen a rapid increase in consumer use especially with HDTVs, HD-DVD and Blu-ray players, HD camcorders and other HD components. HDMI was developed by Hitachi, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Thomson and Silicon Image who came together in a conglomerate effort to simplify the task of connecting and synchronizing available HD components for the user’s benefit.
HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, and that’s a pretty good description of what it is. In layman’s terms, HDMI is a type of digital connection that’s capable of transmitting high-definition video and high-resolution audio over a single cable. To do the same thing with analog cables, you’d need to connect three component-video cables plus six analog audio cables–that’s a whole lot of cable clutter. HDMI is typically used to connect a high-definition device–such as an HD DVR–to an HDTV. To make the connection, you simply put one end of the cable into the HDTV’s HDMI input slot and the other end into the device’s HDMI output slot. And that’s it–just one cable and you’re all set for the high-definition experience. If you have an AV receiver, just put it in the middle of the signal chain. The output of the AV receiver goes to the HDTV and you connect your high-definition device(s) to the AV receiver’s input.

Wow, what a mouthful. If that doesn’t make much sense to you, just think of it like this. HDMI is basically just a cable that can transfer a really high quality image or sound from one piece of equipment to another.
