What Is Hydrocodone APAP 5-500?
Hydrocodone APAP 5-500 is a prescription tablet containing the narcotic hydrocodone and the over-the-counter analgesic acetaminophen. This drug is given for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. The 5-500 in the drug’s name refers to the dosage–this version contains 5 mg of hydrocodone and 500 mg of acetaminophen. The drug is available in other dosages as well. This drug is better known by its trade name Vicodin. Composition Hydrocodone is a synthetic opiate analgesic commonly prescribed for pain relief and cough suppression. Hydrocodone is commonly combined with acetaminophen (known by its trade name Tylenol), since this mixture is more effective at pain relief than either drug taken individually. Acetaminophen is available over-the-counter, but the hydrocodone/acetaminophen combination is considered a narcotic and classified as a Schedule III controlled substance by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration.
