A Reuben sandwich is made with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and dressing. One of two types of dressing are typically used either, Russian or Thousand Island. The sandwich is served between either grilled or toasted rye bread. An alternate variation includes the addition of mayonnaises as well.

Where this famous sandwich originated has not been verified. Several different accounts of the actual first Reuben ever made have become lore on the Internet. The first is from Arnold Reuben (1883-1970), the founder of Reuben’s Restaurant and Delicatessen. The second is from Reuben Kulakofsky (1873-1960), who was a wholesale grocer in Omaha, Nebraska. There are several written accounts that support claims that both men created the famous sandwich.
