What is Indonesias poverty reduction program?
Introduced by the Government of Indonesia in 2007, the Program builds on ten years of experience of community-based development projects. The Program already works in 60,000 rural and urban villages, and by end-2010 is set to reach 80,000 Indonesian villages, benefiting about 35 million of Indonesia’s poor. Participating communities are involved at all stages of planning and implementation. They determine local priorities, carry out projects, manage funds and take responsibility for the Program’s sustainability. With this support, program communities have built infrastructure, like village roads, bridges and water and sanitation systems. They have established community microcredit schemes and invested in health, education and agricultural projects.
