What is International Development?
The Center for Advanced Study of International Development interprets “international development” as a process that goes beyond the usual stereotypical confines of agricultural research. The issues of international development cut across a wide, multidisciplinary spectrum: hunger, poverty, the global economy, the environment and its use and misuse, ethnicity and gender concerns, access to education and medical assistance, and social justice to name only a few. Issues, in short, that critically affect the quality of life, many times even the existence of life itself, for citizens in all countries of the world. While it has been customary to see these concerns as relevant only to the “developing” or “underdeveloped” countries, it is clear that these issues affect all countries in at least some regions within their borders.
