Intranet An Intranet is a network based on the internet TCP/IP open standard. An intranet belongs to an organization, and is designed to be accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web site looks and act just like other Web sites, but has a firewall surrounding it to fend off unauthorized users. Intranets are used to share information. Secure intranets are much less expensive to build and manage than private, proprietary-standard networks. A private network inside a company or organization that uses the same kinds of software that you would find on the public Internet, but that is only for internal use. Compare with extranet. A private space that gives employees in a company the ability to organize information, readily access that information, manage documents, share calendars and enable efficient collaboration, all in a familiar, browser-based environment.  more

The intranet is a TCP/IP network inside of a company (or household), that links internal information together such as company employment, announcements, resources, etc... The information provided is use for internal use only... meaning the outside world can not access this information in contrast to the internet which is public information.  more

Contrary to popular belief, this is not simply a misspelling of "Internet." "Intra" means "internal" or "within," so an Intranet is an internal or private network that can only be accessed within the confines of a company, university, or organization. "Inter" means "between or among," hence the difference between the Internet and an Intranet.  more
