What is involved with prenatal paternity testing?
With DNA analysis, paternity testing can be performed prior to the birth of a child. There are two types of procedures that can be performed, Chronic Villi Sampling (CVS) and Amniocentesis (Amnio), to obtain foetal DNA. CVS is usually performed between 11 and 15 weeks of pregnancy and is done transcervically or transabdominally. The amniocentesis, performed between 15 and 18 weeks of pregnancy, is commonly used to collect foetal cells from the amniotic fluid to use in performing cytogenetic analysis.
