What is Iodine Deficiency Disorder?
Iodine Deficiency Disorder is a general term given to the diseases caused by a deficiency in Iodine in the diet leading to the inability of the Thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone. The irony is that Iodine Deficiency Disorder can be prevented by addition of mill fractions of Iodine in the diet. Iodine Deficiency Disorder can prevent the proper development of the brain in the fetus in early stages of pregnancy. Iodine Deficiency Disorder results in impaired development of brain and mental function. Iodine Deficiency Disorder is usually seen in areas which have seen major ecological upheavals leading to a fall in soil iodine. When iodine intake falls below recommended levels the thyroid may no longer be able to synthesize sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. This leads to the condition of Iodine Deficiency Disorder.
