What is john Gorrie known for inventing?
Dr. John Gorrie lived in Apalachicola, FL in the mid-19th century (pre-civil war). He is credited with developing an artificial cooling machine which he thought at the time would help cure his patients suffering from yellow fever (at the time it was widely believed that heat caused the illness, but it was later discovered it was mosquitos). Even though his invention was considered a failure at the time, his ideas for his artificial cooler was used some 50 years later to develop the first air-conditioner.
