Jujitsu was developed in Japan during the feudal period. Jujitsu is an ancient Japanese martial art that involves grappling, joint lock techniques, strikes and sweeps and ground fighting. In Japanese, the word jujutsu means "gentle skill". The word is a broad term including Judo and a few other martial arts. All jujitsu includes a courteous and respectful atmosphere, a uniform, which generally consists of a plain white robe and pants, and the abstinence of ostentatious display. Jujitsu also involves no trophies, contracts, tags or badges. Jujitsu involves the incorporation of three different states of mind. These states of mind are Zanshin, Mushin, and Fudoshin. The combination of these elements is said to lead to power, preparation and the potential to excel in this martial art. Zanshin means remaining spirit. The principle of Zanshin is to be ready for anything at any given time. Mushin means no mind and allows for spontaneity and instantaneous action. Finally, Fudoshin means immovab ... more

Jujitsu is a martial art which reflects the movements of the attacker back upon him or her. It has been practiced in Japan since the sixteenth century, although Jujitsu has its origins in Chinese martial arts. Jujitsu uses a series of joint locks, small weaponry, and defensive tactics in combination with conserved energy to neutralize an attacker. Many other martial arts such as Judo and Aikido have their roots in Jujitsu. The word “Jujitsu” means the practice of gentleness, and in addition to learning the moves associated with Jujitsu, students also make changes in their characters. Jujitsu is supposed to focus and calm the students, with the aim of making them better martial artists and more refined individuals as well. The movements of Jujitsu are efficient, flowing, and circular, and it is a distinctly beautiful martial art to watch. Jujitsu is also usually practiced within a very small circle, and many Jujitsu moves have been refined for close quarters fighting. Jujitsu reached it ... more

Jujitsu is a centuries-old system of unarmed combat, formulated and practiced by the Samurai warriors of feudal Japan. Many modern martial arts (Judo, Aikido, Ninjitsu, Hapkido, Kempo, Krav Maga and even some systems of Karate) have their roots in Jujitsu. Historically, this art was also known as Taijutsu and Hakuda. There is no “official” way to spell Jujitsu, and you may find it presented as Jujutsu, Ju-jutsu, Ju-Jitsu, Jiu-Jitsu or Jiu-Jutsu. These are all varied translations of the same word and they are all acceptable. Ju in Japanese means flexible, pliable or "to give way" and Jitsu means "art" or "practice". Together these words mean “the art of pliability or flexibility”. Jujitsu is often translated to English as "the gentle art", but this can be misleading as the techniques are not gentle on the attacker. The concept of “gentle” refers more to the fact that the techniques require little strength by the person applying them. The Samurai were professional soldiers and were train ... more

Jujitsu is a truly non aggressive self defence style that emphasizes escape, leverage, body mechanics and the use of balance to avoid fighting. Where karate teaches one how to be an efficient fighter, exchanging blow for blow, jujitsu teaches the art of controlled escape. Karate practitioners punch and kick, thus engaging in the fight. A jujituska will not respond unless physically attacked and will do so by means of escape, joint lock, takedown or throw. Thus ending the fight almost before it has begun. ... more

Jujitsu originally was the unarmed art of the samurai. Samurai warriors in pre-modern Japan used Jujitsu to restrain and disarm opponents. In our modern age Jujitsu has been adapted as the perfect art for personal self defense. Jujitsu employs lock, strikes, throws, kicks, and grappling to teach students how to defend themselves in any situation. "A person trained in jujitsu has a much better chance of walking away from a non-lethal self-defense situation in one piece, and with his attacker unhurt as well. Consider that in karate, you can kick, punch or strike a person, all of which are offensive. Even with a minor altercation, someone can be seriously injured. In jujitsu, however, you can cause great pain (a very good reason for your attacker to stop what he is trying to do to you) without the need to cause injury." -Taken from: http://experts.about.com/q/2252/3023916.htm *Special!* Two Week Intoductory Course $19.95 Includes Free Uniform! ... more

When someone first hears of Jujitsu, they ask what is it? Most mix up the name thinking it is Judo. Jujitsu is the parent art of Japanese martial arts (See history section). "Ju" meaning gentle or supple and "Jitsu" meaning art or science. "Ju" is the effect it has on the practitioner and not the art being gentle. Gentle, meaning being able to become so competent within the art that it becomes gentle to one's self when executing the techniques, whether it be a method of striking or a flow of motion when being thrown. This also refers to the ability to minimise conflict by de-escalating a verbal situation. Being able to walk away from a situation by achieving a result that will be suitable for both parties, or a result that minimises the potential effect to both parties (embarrassment or injury). Jujitsu is the study of the body and its reactions, in movement, anatomic functions and psychology, by training the practitioner to select the appropriate method or techniques to counter a nega ... more

Guest Author - Caroline Baker Jujitsu is a broad term used to represent a style of Martial Arts that originated from the samurai and was one of the key forms they practiced for hand-to-hand combat. From this art derives many of the modern styles, such as Judo and Aikido. It is sometimes lumped into the even wider term of karate, though that does it a great injustice as the art is quite different in origin and intent. The word Jujitsu, sometimes also spelled Jiu-Jitsu, Jujutsu, is literally translated to the gentle art. Its origins are clouded by several legends, some saying it came from a Chinese emigrant, some that it is indigenous to Japan. The idea behind Jujitsu is to maintain efficient use of energy, minimal movements, and utilizing your opponents momentum to your advantage. Traditional Jujitsu does incorporate some weapons, such as the katana, spears and other weapons that would have been common to the samurai. However, it is rare for a lower rank student to work weapons and few ... more

DanZan Ryu JuJitsu is a comprehensive system of self-defense, in which you learn to use leverage, balance, and continuous motion to maximize your effectiveness against a larger and stronger attacker. Students learn rolls, falls, escapes, joint locks, throws, and grappling techniques, as well as the blocks, punches, and kicks more commonly associated with the martial arts. The variety of techniques allows you to use only the force you need to defend yourself and those you love. JuJitsu is challenging, exciting, and fun! More importantly, JuJitsu teaches us that the best way to win a fight is not to have one. We learn to be aware of our surroundings, to recognize and heed the subtle signs that warn us of danger, so we can get out of harms way. We also practice awareness of our own actions and words, learning how what we do affects others, so we can defuse tense situations before they escalate into violence. The highest ideal within JuJitsu is of the warrior as healer and peacemaker. JuJi ... more
