When someone first hears of Jujitsu, they ask what is it? Most mix up the name thinking it is Judo. Jujitsu is the parent art of Japanese martial arts (See history section). “Ju” meaning gentle or supple and “Jitsu” meaning art or science. “Ju” is the effect it has on the practitioner and not the art being gentle. Gentle, meaning being able to become so competent within the art that it becomes gentle to one’s self when executing the techniques, whether it be a method of striking or a flow of motion when being thrown. This also refers to the ability to minimise conflict by de-escalating a verbal situation. Being able to walk away from a situation by achieving a result that will be suitable for both parties, or a result that minimises the potential effect to both parties (embarrassment or injury). Jujitsu originally was the unarmed art of the samurai. Samurai warriors in pre-modern Japan used Jujitsu to restrain and disarm opponents. In our modern age Jujitsu has been adapted as the perfect art for personal self defense. Jujitsu employs lock, strikes, throws, kicks, and grappling to teach students how to defend themselves in any situation. “A person trained in jujitsu has a much better chance of walking away from a non-lethal self-defense situation in one piece, and with his attacker unhurt as well. Consider that in karate, you can kick, punch or strike a person, all of which are offensive. Even with a minor altercation, someone can be seriously injured. In jujitsu, however, you can cause great pain (a very good reason for your attacker to stop what he is trying to do to you) without the need to cause injury.” -Taken from: http://experts.about.com/q/2252/3023916.htm *Special!* Two Week Intoductory Course $19.95 Includes Free Uniform!

This video should help you decide if jujitsu is your art. I’m told that Small Circle Jujitsu is a registered trademark. Check out their website for details.

Jujitsu is a truly non aggressive self defence style that emphasizes escape, leverage, body mechanics and the use of balance to avoid fighting. Where karate teaches one how to be an efficient fighter, exchanging blow for blow, jujitsu teaches the art of controlled escape. Karate practitioners punch and kick, thus engaging in the fight. A jujituska will not respond unless physically attacked and will do so by means of escape, joint lock, takedown or throw. Thus ending the fight almost before it has begun.
