What is kalish”s hierarchy of needs?
Psychologist Richard A. Kalish offered a refinement to the famous “hierarchy of needs” proposed by Abraham Maslow. If you’re not familiar with that as a starting point, read up on it here, and note especially the pyramid-shaped diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_… Kalish’s refinement was essentially to add another layer between the bottom two levels. In his view, the bottom level (Maslow’s “Physiological”) is reserved for the essentials of survival and elementary comfort: food, air, water, acceptable temperature, rest, elimination, freedom from pain, etc. Then, above that level and below “Safety”, Kalish inserts “Stimulation” needs: activity, exploration, sex, stimulation, novelty. Nurses and other caregivers take note of Kalish’s extended model for its emphasis that fulfilling the need for mental stimulation is essential and fundamental to human health and happiness.
