What is MASH?
Mash is used for two different types of feed. Dry mash, as bought in bags or sacks from feed merchants, is a compound feed that’s specifically designed to provide a balanced diet for poultry. There are various forms of dry mash, intended for feeding to chicks, growers, layers and breeding birds. The other form of mash is a home-made feed containing a mix of ingredients including cooked potatoes, oats, wheat, barley, vegetables and the like. Mash should be moist and crumbly—not a soup or liquid porridge. (And note, in the UK it is illegal to feed kitchen waste to “farmed animals” and this include “pets which in usual circumstances would be considered an animal more suitable to a farm environment”.
