What is motivational hedonism?
Motivational hedonism is said to be the ‘most significant form of psychological hedonism’. Already during the 18th century, Jeremy Bentham was having discussions with his friend about only pleasure got any value and pain is the one and only that stands for disvalue. From his book ‘An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation’ we find the following quotation: “Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain, and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do’. (Bentham 1789). Among the other contributors to Motivational Hedonism we find Plato, Mill and More.
