There will be high school seniors, student-athletes, all over the country sitting at their high school media day where they will sign to play DI or DII football with a college or university. This day is commonly known as National Signing Day. This day actually opens up a signing period which begins the first Wednesday in February through April 1. But here’s the deal. Once the NLI is received by the student-athlete during this signing period, the student-athlete has 14 days to sign. What is a National Letter of Intent? The NLI is a legal binding agreement that obligates the student-athlete to a particular college or university. The NLI must also be accompanied by an institutional financial aid agreement (scholarship). For this reason a “walk on” student-athlete CAN NOT sign a NLI. Signing a NLI implies a scholarship has been offered.
