What is Net-Metering?
Net Metering is the process of running your meter backwards at the same rate as you are charged (typically 8-17 cents per kilowatt) by transferring the excess generated electricity back into the system to the utility company. As long as you produce as much power as you use, even it it is not at the same time, your net energy bill will be 0. However meter, demand and phase charges may still apply so you will still have some bill from the electric company.
Net metering measures the difference between the electricity you buy from your utility and the electricity you produce with your solar energy system. Under net metering, any excess electricity produced by your solar energy system is delivered back into the utility grid, effectively spinning your meter backwards. Your meter spins forward when your solar energy system is not producing all of the electricity you are currently using. Your electric meter keeps track of this net difference as you generate electricity and take electricity from the utility grid.
• Net metering is offered to residential customers who install photovoltaic systems with ratings up to 10kW, wind systems with nameplate ratings up to 25kW, and farm customers who install farm waste systems with nameplate ratings up to 400kW, and are interconnected with Central Hudson. Excess energy generated by these systems can be “sold” back to Central Hudson, provided the systems meet certain guidelines. The surplus energy is subtracted, or “netted,” from the energy supplied by Central Hudson, thus “net metered.” Systems must be installed by New York State approved contractors.
