What is Network Address Translation (NAT)?
NAT is one of the more powerful firewalling technologies, which allows your network to utilize a single IP address. This helps your network to remain hidden from the public Internet by hiding behind the single IP address of BizGuardian. This address will be automatically allocated by your ISP if you are using BizGuardian through its DHCP client. This saves the expense of additional (or any) IP addresses being purchased from your ISP. It also means that you can use any addressing schema that you like internally without having to take external addressing convention, or availability, into account.
Network Address Translation is an Internet standard that allows your local network to use private IP addresses, which are not recognized on the Internet and provide increased security. Note: This article applies to ScreenOS 4.0 and higher and JUNOS Enhanced Services 8.5 and higher. When an interface is in NAT mode, your Juniper device translates two components in the header of an IP packet bound for the Untrust zone: its source IP address and source port number. The Juniper device replaces the source IP address of the host that sent the packet with the IP address of the interface of the destination zone. In addition, it replaces the source port number with another random port number generated by the Juniper device. When the reply packet arrives at the Juniper device, the device translates two components in the IP header of the incoming packet: the destination address and port number, which are translated back to the original numbers. The packet is then forwarded to its destination. NAT adds a level of security not provided in Transparent mode; the addresses of hosts connected to an interface in NAT mode are never exposed to hosts in the Untrust zone.
Network Address Translation enables a Local Area Network (LAN) to use one set of one IP addresses for internal traffic and a second set of addresses for external traffic. NAT then translates the private IP address being used on an individual system, on a network, to a valid Internet IP address (the one on the router). Outbound connections to the Internet through a router that is running NAT should not be a problem when using Timbuktu Pro. However, inbound connections cannot be made, by default, due to the fact that the network uses private IP addresses which cannot be located on the internet. A connection can be made to a SINGLE SYSTEM that is behind the NAT router when proper configuring has been done. Following are the steps to take before the connection can be made.
