I’m so very sorry. At 12 weeks there would definitely have been a heartbeat. What exactly was seen? Perhaps it’s a blighted ovum. I had a loss due to a blighted ovum back in 2/98. I was 10 weeks along, but the sac measured only 5. A blighted ovum is an empty sac, the fetus never properly formed and the sac remains empty. If your hcg levels are going down and another ultrasound shows that there is nothing there, then you may very well require a D&C (not DNC). A D&C (dilation and currettage) is done to remove tissue from the uterus, very common procedure when a woman has a miscarriage. It’s not ALWAYS required, though. In my case, I needed an emergency one 2 days after my miscarriage b/c of severe pains and tissue being left in the uterus. The D&C is done to prevent infection from setting in if there is tissue remaining.
