What is “organic beef” in dog food?
“Organic Beef” is beef that has not been given any growth hormones, and has only been fed organic grains. Frankly I’m not big on the growth hormones, but I think that the organic grains is unneccessary. The growth hormoes are there simply to make the cows bigger, and there really hasn’t been much research on what impact it has (if any) on those who eat the beef. However, pesticides used to protect various grains (corn, etc.) have been studied for years and are safe (for the grains – overdoing the pesticides can end up putting them into the water supply). Genetically modified grains (modified to be more resistant to diseases) have been getting a fair amount of research. While I don’t think that the final verdict is in, research seems to indicate that genetically modified grains have no impact on those that eat them. Looking at the ingredients, there are better quality foods that cost less, but Newmans is going to be of much better quality than the food that cost .69 cents a can. Organic ingredients do cost much more and are better for you pet, but I think this is a little overpriced. Take a look at dogfoodanlysis.com for an independent review of most available dog foods. They don’t rate canned food, but since the quality of canned should be comparable to the dry formulas it should be rated about the same.
