What is Orientation & Mobility?
Orientation and Mobility (O& M) involves the training of safe and independent travel for visually impaired students on the school campus and in the community. Orientation and mobility is a related service provided by a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Qualification for orientation and mobility services is based on the results of a Functional Vision Evaluation and Orientation and Mobility Assessment. The O&M Specialist works with the student and their family to facilitate independence. The skills involved in this instruction include but are not limited to: concept development, motor development, sensory development, human guide technique, cane techniques, parent training, route planning, and instructional use of low vision devices, career exploration, daily living skills, in -service training, school familiarization, and engineering classrooms.
