What is Osage?
Osage is a type of tree, also known as Bois dArc, Hedge, Horseapple or Osage Orange. This tree grows throughout the central and eastern United States, as well as Europe. The color of the wood is a beautiful, bright royal yellow, reminding one of a stunning sunrise, but on prolonged exposure to the sun, changes to a deep, rich, chocolate brown. This wood is extremely durable, naturally impervious to the weather, insects, and time. Yet, it can be worked by hand to produce a bow that is flexible, fast, and powerful. Fence posts made with Osage by the pioneers of the United States are still in use today, with little or no deterioration. These pioneers and early settlers of North America discovered to their dismay just how powerful and strong were the bows made of Osage by Native Americans.
