What is Pachelbel doing on a program of Italian music?

The short answer is that we wanted to play it! Our annual Baroque concert takes a twist with PACHELBEL IN VENICE, honoring that composer’s famous Canon in D, as well as music from the Italian baroque period: all delightful, toe-tapping and rewarding. Pachelbel, of course, was not Italian. But Venice’s St. Mark’s Cathedral was the setting for the creation of a great deal of wonderful music by the Gabrielli family in the late 16th century. Beautiful brass sonorities are a hallmark of this music. Also on this program is the very accomplished choir of Jackson’s St. Andrew’s Cathedral, singing with our brass. Rounding out the program is music of Albinoni, Monteverdi, Corelli and a bassoon concerto by Vivaldi, with MSO principal bassoonist Jon Wenberg.
