Perfect binding is one of the most amazing binding methods available today. Many perfect-binding machines are used for larger runs, but newer machinery is being specifically made for quick binding and fast turnaround. This is making it possible to produce a single, on-demand book professionally and cost effectively, too. Perfect binding is a form of adhesive binding. It is the process of applying hot melt glue to the spine of a book and applying a cover. This binding is sometimes called a "soft cover", which is similar to a paperback novel binding. It is excellent for books, corporate reports, manuals, brochures, and annual reports. The advantages are: versatility, longevity, inexpensive, excellent overall look and visual appeal. Perfect binding is a method of bookbinding that is utilized for many types of less expensive books, manuals, and other simple collections of documents. Unlike some binding processes that require sewing the pages into the spine of the book, perfect binding requires no sewing at all. Instead, a water-resistant adhesive is used to hold the pages in place by attaching them to the cover of the document. The actual process of perfect binding involves aligning the individual pages of the book so that they form a perfect stack. It is not unusual for the book binder to use a clamp to hold the pages in place once they are properly aligned. The pages are then glued together along the binding side of the stack. Once the process of gluing the pages together is completed, a second application of glue is used to secure the cover to the collection of pages. When finished, perfect binding creates a clean look with a flat spine. In most applications, perfect binding is used with less expensive binding ...  more

Perfect binding is the most common type of binding used today. The pages are trimmed on all sides and then glued onto the cover, either hard or soft. This is an economical binding and all manner of books today use it, even some high quality coffee table books. At PhotoBook Press all of our softcover books are perfect bound and our most economical hard cover books are perfect bound wrapped in a hard cover binding.

The printed and folded signatures are first gathered together. The cover is scored to the thickness of the spine, creating a channel or groove for the gathered signatures. Often, an additional score is placed on either or both the front and back covers to act as a hinge to help prevent stress at the binding every time the cover is opened and to allow glue to creep over the edge. The gathered signatures are pressed together and the bind edge is ground to expose the paper's fibers, hot glue is applied to the roughened edge, and then the cover is joined to the signatures and clamped until dry. The bound books are then trimmed on three sides and finished.  more
