What is Peridot (also known as Chrysolite)?
Occurring as small crystals, rocks and grains, Peridot is found in varying shades of green. The deeper the green colour, the less iron is present in the crystal and the higher the quality of the gem. The common form of Peridot is known as Olivine and just to confuse you totally, Peridot is also called Chrysolite, and what is commonly known as the ‘Peridot of Ceylon’ is actually Yellow Tourmaline or Tsilasite and not Peridot at all! Peridot is one of the oldest crystals on the Earth. It is derived from Peridotite in the Earth’s mantle. Magma, rich in iron and magnesium produces Peridot. It is also commonly found in Meteorites and is probably one of the oldest types of crystal found in the universe.
