What is Perimeter Weighting?
Older iron club designs had the weight evenly distributed throughout the club. This meant that the club had to be hit dead centre in order to get the optimum shot. There was very little room for error – mis-hits from the centre generally meant trouble! While many players still prefer the “blades” as they were known, the newer design has “perimiter weighting”. What this meant was that the weight was no longer distributed throughout the club, but was instead distributed on the perimeter of the club which allowed for the lowering of the centre of gravity. What this has meant is that the best hit still comes from dead centre as before, there is now “margin for error” and mis-hits are not as dramatic as they were previously. Most players should use perimeter weighted irons.
