What is Periodontal Probing and What Do All Thoses Numbers Mean ?

If you are a patient in our practice then you most likely already know what we are talking about with the numbers and bleeding points. For those of you who are new or considering our office for your dental care, I’ll explain. In completing a periodontal examination of your mouth, we will be taking 6 measurements around each tooth using a special instrument called a periodontal probe. This probe allows us to measure the depth of the space between your teeth and gums, called a sulcus or pocket. This space is present 360 degrees around your tooth and with healthy supporting structures should measure 1 – 3 millimeters in depth. With periodontal disease, this sulcus becomes deeper due to both swelling of the gum tissue and loss of the bone supporting the teeth. As we are probing your mouth we will be calling out these depths (remember 6 measurements per tooth) and charting them to complete a record for your entire mouth.
