What is professional registration and how is it different to membership?
Membership of the IET and the categories of professional registration are separate. IET membership is awarded to applicants who have achieved the required standard of knowledge and understanding in their field of engineering or technology. Professional registration is open to members of the IET and represents a further level of professional recognition, and so requires a greater level of assessment. Based on your skills and experience, you may be ready to apply for professional registration now, or you may need to work towards this through a professional development plan. As a member of the IET, we will support you as necessary in your professional development needs to help you become professionally registered. The Engineering Council UK (ECUK) maintains the register of professional engineers and licenses the IET to assess applicants on its behalf. The professional registration categories are: • Chartered Engineer (CEng) • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) • Engineering Technician (EngTech)
