What is Project ELF?
Project ELF got its name from its use of Extremely Low Frequency radio waves. These radio signals are produced by pumping millions of watts of electricity into the ground at sites near Clam Lake, Wisconsin, and Republic, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. ELF waves radiate continuously, through the earth and sea water, around the globe. They can only be heard by Trident submarines, deep in the oceans. Communications are one-way, from the command post to the subs. Each of the 18 Tridents cost $1.9 billion, and each carries 24 megatons of H-bomb explosive power. (That’s eight times the explosive power used by all parties in World War II, including the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs.) In addition to its connection with H-bombs, Project ELF has raised many concerns about the health effects of the electromagnetic field it creates. Six of Wisconsin’s nine-person congressional delegation have condemned ELF, as have most of the region’s major newspapers. US Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis), curr
