What Is Proportional Representation? Why is it better?

The present ‘first-past-the-post’ system worked reasonably well when there were only two parties and only two candidates in a riding. Now we may have four or five candidates in each riding representing the major parties, and independent candidates as well. This means that a candidate may be elected with only 25% of the vote in a riding; put another way, a majority of the votes might elect nobody! A Proportional Representation system where the majority of the votes are counted toward electing representatives would be introduced by the Green Party. However, in order to introduce Proportional Representation, a significant majority of votes to elect a Green MP in the riding are needed now! Vote Green!
