What is Prostate Removal Surgery?
The prostate gland is an organ at the base of the bladder in men and its primary function is to help produce part of the fluid that makes up semen. Prostate removal surgery involves removing a portion of the gland or the whole gland through laparoscopy, abdominal incision or a combination of the two techniques: • Open surgery – an incision is made in the lower belly or between the anus and the penis to remove the whole prostate or a portion of it. • Laparoscopic surgery – several small incisions are made in the belly and a lighted instrument with a camera on the end is inserted into one of the incisions. Another instrument is inserted to remove the prostate and surrounding tissue.
