Rattan is a species of palm which grows in Africa, Asia and in Australasia. 70% of the world’s supply of rattan comes from Indonesia. Before rattan was used in rattan furniture, it was well known in the UK as being the material of school canes, which many a schoolboy would have felt the sharp end of in years gone by. As a result of its strength, rattan is also used to create martial arts canes, although most rattan that is harvested is done so for use in rattan furniture, because of its strength and its pliability.
